Althaea speaks Common, Druidic, Elvish, and Kordilian. She also speaks Sylvian, the language of woodland creatures. She is proficient in light and medium armor, shields, clubs, daggers, darts, javelins, maces, quarterstaves, scimitars, sickles, slings, spears, long and short swords, and long and short bows.
Althaea is skilled in Animal Handling, Athletics, Nature, Perception, and Survival. As an elf, she has superior vision; and as a wood elf she can hide even when only lightly obscured. As a druid, she can transform into the shape of any creature she has seen. As on outlander, she has an excellent memory for maps and geography; Althaea can always recall the general layout of terrain, settlements, and other features around her; she can also find food and water for herself and up to five other people each day.
Althaea was abandoned in the woods and raised by wolves. The alpha male of her pack was a strong wolf with marbled fur and amber wolf eyes; he was a noble wolf who ruled the pack with wisdom.
The alpha female was named Lyall, a silver-white wolf with blue eyes and distinctive markings on her face; she earned her name, which means “shield wolf” in Old Norse, because she was a fierce defender of the pack.
Felan was a reddish-brown male wolf, fully grown but small in size, hence his name which is Celtic for “small wolf.” He was nevertheless determined to do his share in the pack and tended to overcompensate for his small size by volunteering for everything and dragging back huge logs, often larger than himself, for the fire to keep their elvish packmate warm.
Another wolf of the pack was Ecru, a cold and imperious female arctic wolf. Ecru was hunting on the ice during an arctic storm in her homeland when the icy escarpment above her collapsed; she was knocked unconscious by a shard of ice and her ice flow was separated from the rest of the structure. She drifted far south of the arctic circle and joined Althaea’s pack rather than make her way back alone to her arctic homeland.
Russet was a male wolf with russet colored fur. Although he was a full-grown member of the pack, he tended to behave like a pup, preferring play to responsibility.
The final adult member of the pack was Koliya, a black wolf (her name is the word for black in Assamese) with eyes of jet. She was somewhat of an outsider in the pack, preferring to hunt alone in the dark of midnight. She was not an evil wolf, but there was something about her that many found suspicious.
The pack also had a litter of newborn pups. Firstborn was Auburne, a female wolf pup with silver eyes and red-brown fur almost golden in color; she was loving and playful as well as intelligent and curious.
Faolan was a male wolf pup, born the runt of the litter, thus named “little wolf” in Irish Galic. Faolan was white-grey in color and very industrious, determined to make his way in the pack.
Zeef (his name is a variation on the Yiddish word for wolf) was a friendly and easygoing male pup. He was determined to make friends with everyone, but he was especially enamored of Koliya, given to imitating her and following her everywhere she went. He even tried to join her on her midnight hunts, but Koliya always managed to shake her small shadow or she caught him and carried him back to the pack by the scruff of his neck and deposited him with his littermates.
Life with the Druids
Eventually, Althaea was removed from the wolf pack and taken in by Druids. She lived the remainder of her childhood as an outlander in a hunter/gatherer society. Because of her upbringing, Althaea believes that an injury to the unspoiled wilderness of her home is an injury to herself, values honor, and is slow to trust others.
Althaea carries with her the trophy of a creature she killed. Until recently, she did not know what the creature was called, having never seen a similar creature before or after; this was probably why she had kept its head. The creature was a weird dragon looking thing which she had discovered attacking other animals. The dragon thing had weird gray skin which appeared corpse like even when it was alive. When she had found it, the dragon thing had breathed a powder on an animal which dissolved its skin; then the creature had eaten its bones. Althaea later learned that the creature was called a Callufrax.
Althaea was part of the band of adventurers who investigated the ancient Kordillians, discovering the lost city of New Kordil and Tisrim-Which-Is-Below. During these investigations, she and Nell journeyed to the Center of the Earth; then she, Nell, and Andraste discovered the Lost World where Mammoths and Elephants from the Ice Age survive.
Althaea has a companion pygmy-mammoth, given to her by the ancestors of the elephants in the Elephant portion of the Divine Realms, after she and her companions Andraste and Nell passed the ancestors’ test of worthiness.
